Becoming a nursing student at VFA Learning felt like a natural fit for Olivia Lacey. After graduating high school and taking a year to explore her options, Olivia found her calling in healthcare. Inspired by her best friend—a VFA Learning graduate—Olivia enrolled in the Diploma of Nursing program at VFA Learning’s Geelong campus. Joining the course just a week after it began, Olivia quickly realised she’d made the right choice, eventually becoming an award-winning nursing student.
Olivia thrived in VFA’s supportive and hands-on learning environment throughout her studies. One of the standout aspects of her experience was the diverse range of clinical placements. From aged care facilities to acute care at Geelong University Hospital, Olivia was exposed to the many facets of nursing.
“VFA is really good at putting you out in different environments. You get a broad perspective and see what makes a good nurse.”
Despite the demands of balancing coursework, placements, and personal life, Olivia rose to the challenge with determination and practical strategies. She set up a designated study area at home and used to-do lists to stay organised, ensuring she could focus on her goals without becoming overwhelmed.
Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was awarded the prestigious 2024 ANMF (Vic Branch) Student Nurse/Midwife Award at a ceremony on Thursday 12th December. This honour recognises students who demonstrate qualities intrinsic to nursing, including excellent communication skills, ethical practice, and a commitment to excellence. Olivia’s ability to form strong connections with peers, trainers, and staff during placements made her a standout recipient.
Reflecting on her time at VFA, Olivia credits the program’s small class sizes and personalised support for her success. She particularly valued the trainers’ real-world experience and the opportunity to learn in an environment where everyone was invested in her growth.
Olivia is optimistic about her future. She is currently working in a pharmacy while preparing for competitive graduate positions in Geelong. She attributes much of her confidence and readiness to the supportive and practical learning environment at VFA Learning.
“VFA is such a welcoming place where everyone genuinely wants you to succeed. I’d recommend it to anyone considering a career in nursing or other specialties they offer.”
