How Vocational Education Can Be a Game Changer

By August 21, 2024No Comments

As we celebrate National Skills Week 2024 with the theme “VET – It’s a Game Changer,” we’re excited to highlight how vocational education and training (VET) can open new doors and transform careers.

At VFA Learning, we’ve seen firsthand how VET programs can change lives at any stage. This year, we’re sharing the inspiring journeys of Mark, Hannah, and Tim—three remarkable VFA graduates whose stories showcase the power of vocational education.

Mark’s Journey: From IT to Myotherapy

Mark Skec’s shift from IT to myotherapy shows how VET can be a true game changer. After years in IT, Mark wanted a career aligned with his passion for helping others. Through VFA Learning’s myotherapy program, he gained the hands-on skills and confidence to make the switch. Today, Mark works with high-profile clients, including those in the AFL.

“Without the massage training, I wouldn’t have had the chance to work in environments like the AFL,” Mark says.

His story is a testament to how vocational training can unlock new professional opportunities.

Hannah’s Transformation: From Desk Job to Dream Job

Hannah’s journey is all about turning a passion into a profession. After starting a Bachelor of Commerce, she realised it wasn’t the right fit and pivoted to a Certificate IV in Fitness at VFA Learning. The practical, hands-on training gave her the skills and confidence to teach fitness classes even before completing her course.

“VFA’s hands-on approach has opened doors to new opportunities in the fitness industry,” Hannah shares.

She has dreams of one day opening a multidisciplinary health hub, combining personal training, group fitness, and allied health services.

Tim’s Journey: Balancing Parenthood and a Career Change

Tim’s story highlights how VET can offer the flexibility needed for those juggling personal responsibilities. With a background in management, Tim made a significant career change to nursing. As a single parent, he needed a study arrangement that fit his life. VFA Learning’s flexible program, combining onsite and online learning, made it possible for him to pursue his dreams.

“The flexibility of VFA’s course was a huge advantage,” Tim explains. “It allowed me to balance my studies with family commitments.”

Despite the challenges of the pandemic and personal loss, Tim’s determination and the support from VFA staff helped him stay on track. Today, he works as a nurse at Barwon Health and mentors VFA students, giving back to the community.

Why Career Changes Are More Common Than Ever

More people than ever are changing careers, seeking roles that better align with their goals and lifestyles. Common reasons include:

  • Pursuing Better Opportunities: Roles that offer improved pay, growth, or satisfaction.
  • Needing Greater Flexibility: Especially important for those with personal responsibilities.
  • Desiring Personal Growth: Moving into fields that align with personal passions.
  • Improving Job Security: Seeking stable careers with promising prospects.
  • Making a Greater Impact: Choosing roles that offer fulfilment through service or community impact.

In the post-COVID world, career goals and priorities have shifted, making fields like nursing, education, childcare, fitness, and massage increasingly attractive for those seeking meaningful, adaptable careers.

The Power of Vocational Training

Vocational education offers the skills needed for specific roles and the flexibility to adapt to life’s changes. Our programs are designed to provide practical, real-world skills, ensuring our students are ready to thrive in their chosen industries.

“Vocational education is truly a game changer,” says Emily Sicura, VFA Learning’s General Manager. “It empowers individuals with practical skills and provides the flexibility and resilience needed to thrive in diverse career landscapes. As our economy evolves, the ability to pivot and adapt has never been more critical, and VET plays a crucial role in enabling this transformation.”

Just like Mark, Hannah, and Tim, many of our students find that vocational training is the key to unlocking new opportunities. So, how can we help you write your own success story?
